Federal Bureau of Prisons Clinical Practice Guidelines: Management of HIV

Guidelines for the evaluation and treatment of federal inmates with HIV infection are presented. Procedures cover: diagnosis and reporting; natural history of HIV infection; baseline medical evaluations; classification of HIV infection; periodic medical evaluations; prophylaxis of opportunistic infections (OIs); treatment -- antiretroviral therapy; documentation; transition to the community; and infection control. Appendixes provide information about: guidelines regarding medical care of HIV-infected persons; criteria for testing for HIV infection; correlation of complications with CD4 and T-cell count; baseline and periodic medical evaluations for inmates with HIV infections; HIV Classification System; prophylaxis for HIV-related OIs; antiretroviral treatment indications for HIV infection; preferred antiretroviral regimens for antiretroviral-naive patients; alternative antiretroviral regimens for antiretroviral-naive patients; and antiretroviral drugs and components not recommended.
