Addiction Counseling Competencies: The Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes of Professional Practice

"[C]ompetencies that are essential to the effective practice of counseling for psychoactive substance use disorders…[and]knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) counselors need to become fully proficient in each competency" are described (p. 1). This publication is comprised of four sections: transdisciplinary foundations -- understanding addiction, treatment knowledge, application to practice, and professional readiness; practice dimensions -- clinical evaluation, treatment planning, referral, service coordination, counseling, client, family, and community education, documentation, and professional and ethical responsibilities; additional resources; and appendixes which include a glossary, "The Competencies: A Complete List," and "National Validation Study: Defining and Measuring the Competence of Addiction Counselors."
