The relationships between bail, pretrial detention, and case outcomes for nonfelony cases is examined. Sections of this brief are: introduction; research questions; extent of pretrial detention; detention measures; how the amount of bail affects the length of detention; how pretrial detention affects the likelihood of conviction; pretrial detention's impact on the likelihood of incarceration; how pretrial detention affects sentence length; measuring bail amount and sentence length; summary and conclusions; and policy implications.
