Key indicators and data elements for prison performance standards are described. Standards include: public safety -- escapes and returns to prisons; institutional safety -- prisoner-on-prisoner assaults, prisoner-on-staff assaults, prisoner-on-prisoner sexual violence, prisoner-on-staff sexual violence; staff-on-prisoner sexual misconduct, prisoner-on-prisoner homicides, prisoner-on-staff homicides, prisoner suicides, positive drug tests, and disturbances; substance abuse and mental health -- substance abuse treatment and mental health services; and contextual information offender profile -- commitment type, offense type, demographics, sentence length, and time served. This document is an addendum to "Defining and Measuring Corrections Performance" (NIC no. 019099).
