Health Status, Service Use, and Costs Among Veterans Receiving Outreach Services in Jail or Community Settings

A group of incarcerated veterans' sociodemographic/clinical characteristics, health service use, and health care costs are compared to a group of homeless veterans. Sections of this article following an abstract are: introduction; methods; results according to sample characteristics, service use, and service costs; and discussion and conclusions. "Among the veterans who used VA services, total annual health care expenditures for those who were contacted in jail were $2,318 less, or 30 percent less, than for the homeless veterans who were contacted through community outreach" (p. 203-204).
