Results from an evaluation of a jail diversion initiative for offenders with co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorders are presented. This report is divided into the following sections: background; previous research; the Jail Diversion Knowledge Development and Application (KDA); initiative program accomplishments; client outcomes; major findings according to time in the community, arrests, treatment, mental health symptoms, and cost data; and summary and conclusions. In general, jail diversion reduces time spent in jail, criminal justice cost, and treatment costs.
