Findings based on analysis of data regarding substance abuse programs in state prisons from July 1, 1999 through June 30, 2000 are presented. This report contains the following sections: program types; glossary of terms; demographics, outcomes, and recommitment rates across program types; tier 1 (psychological/education) substance abuse program services; modality 1 (intensive outpatient services); modality 2 (long-term, residential therapeutic community (TC) services); modality 3 (comprehensive outpatient, relapse and transitional services); and residential co-occurring disorders (dual diagnosis). Modality 3 had the highest success rate (three years after program entry) of 95.8%, with Modality 2 having the lowest success rate of 54.5%.
