Emerging Judicial Strategies for the Mentally Ill in the Criminal Caseload: Mental Health Courts in Fort Lauderdale, Seattle, San Bernardino, and Anchorage

An examination of the first four mental health courts to be operated in the U.S. is presented. This report's executive summary discusses the origin of a mental health court approach, common features of and differences among the four mental health courts, and issues raised by the emergence of a mental health court model. Chapters of this report include: introduction; the Broward County (Fort Lauderdale) Mental Health Court; the King County (Washington) District Court Mental Health Court; the Anchorage Mental Health Court; the San Bernardino (California) Mental Health Court; and early mental health court initiatives -- common themes and emerging issues.
