The Psychological Effects of 60 Days in Administrative Segregation

Report contents include: executive summary; introduction; negative effects versus no negative effects; evaluation of existing research on segregation -- a review of methodological shortcomings; hypotheses; method design, procedures, and measures; results such as descriptive findings, mental health and psychological functioning in offenders who completed three sessions, and segregated offenders who completed three sessions versus those who completed one or two sessions; and discussion about generalization issues. While "segregated offenders had poorer mental health and psychological functioning. . .there was no evidence that over a period of 60 days the mental health and psychological functioning of segregated offenders significantly deteriorated (p. ii)."
