Female Adolescent Aggression: A Review of the Literature and the Correlates of Aggression

The unique characteristics and needs of adolescent girls who may be prone to violent behavior are discussed. This report is divided into the following sections: frequency of aggression among adolescent girls; aggression and girls under the age of 12 -- conceptual issues; correlates of aggression in adolescent girls 12-17 years old; and implications of the research to date. Findings reveal that over the past 10 years, the rate for violent offenses with Canadian girls has increased at twice the rate for boys. Aggression in girls can be both relational as well as physical. Current assessment tools need to be revised in order to better reflect the life experiences of girls. Accession Number: 016028
