The Risks Juveniles Face When They Are Incarcerated with Adults

Nearly 100 years ago, the juvenile justice system was created to keep juveniles separate from adults due to the adverse treatment of children in adult facilities. This report describes the tragic consequences that will result if legislation is passed that reunites children and adults in the same institutional system. Substantial research shows that putting juveniles into adult facilities increases criminal behavior after youth are released. The suicide rate of juveniles in adult facilities is 7.7 times higher than the rate in juvenile detention centers. Youth also face the greatest risk for sexual assault. Accession Number: 015911
