Predicting Adult Offender Recidivism: What Works!

A meta-analysis of literature reporting on recidivism prediction for adult offenders was conducted. The strongest predictors of recidivism included criminogenic need, criminal history/history of antisocial behavior, social achievement, age/gender/race, and family factors. Dynamic predictors (those that reflect mutable aspects of present offender behavior and environment) are just as good at predicting recidivism as static predictors based on aspects of the offender's past. The Level of Service Inventory (LSI-R) was the best overall composite risk measure tool, while the Psychopathy Check List (PCL-R) was the best antisocial personality scale. In other words, these two scales showed the most correlation between predictors and recidivism. Accession Number: 015525
