There are 491 inmates in Florida prisons that are 17 and younger. Many of these individuals are male and black (95.7% and 68%, respectively). They were incarcerated due to violent crime (63.1%), robbery (36.4%), or burglary (28.3%). Most are serving a sentence of 5 years or less (74.7%). Nine out of ten had been arrested as a juvenile for a violent crime, on average committing 16 prior violent crimes each. In the first 24 months, these inmates commit an average of 4.9 disciplinary infractions, compared to adults at 1.7. Younger inmates also commit 1.5 violent disciplinary infractions, on average, compared to adults at 0.4. The recidivism rate for youth was 28.4%, compared to the adults' rate of 18.5%.
