During the past decade, 140,000 drug-using offenders have been under drug court supervision with 71% either successfully completing or currently participating in court-mandated, comprehensive treatment programs. Research shows that drug courts are more successful than any other type of community supervision in closely monitoring drug offenders in the community. This document describes: the need for drug offenders in the community. This document describes: the need for drug court systems; mission statement and 10 key components of drug court systems; benefits; challenges to development; finding resources; examples from the field; and, a national strategy for drug court systems.
