A Visit to Valley State Prison for Women

Observations and corresponding issues concerning the Valley State Prison for Women (VSPW) are recorded. Most striking is that the great preponderance of staff are male. Male staff are allowed to conduct pat searches of women prisoners. Men are present or are easily able to view strip searches. Health care provision at USPW could serve as a model of excellence. Structured prisoner programs appear to be very well run. The Administrative Segregation and Special Housing Unit fostered a "shocking" regime. Overall, the prison "failed" to differentiate adequately that this is a prison for women (p.22)." Accession Number: 015247
