GIU: "Gang Intel" Unit

Gang-related crime affects 95% of the largest U.S. cities and 88% of the smaller cities. This article describes how the NYC Department of Corrections is addressing the gang presence in its jails. In April 1997 the Gang Intelligence Unit (GIU) became operational. Also created was a gang and Security Risk Groups (SRG) tracking system. This computer database allows GIU to know what gang members are in custody on a given day. The system also enables the GIU to efficiently manage crimes within jails. Inmate arrest activity has increased 250% since GIU began. Accession Number: 015227
