Report of the Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, Its Causes and Consequences: Mission to the United States of America on the Issue of Violence Against Women in State and Federal Prisons

Resulting from a trip to the United States from 31 May to 18 June 1998, this study presents the findings of the Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women in Prisons. Contents of this report include: an introduction; information about individual cases; policy framework; legal framework for the treatment of prisoners; general findings on diversity and lack of minimum standards, use of instruments of restraint, sexual misconduct, health care, parenting, grievance procedures, impunity and corrections offices, private industry, and privatization of prisons; specific findings in regards to California, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, New York and Connecticut, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service; and recommendations addressed to Federal and State levels.
