This paper provides data on the 103 deaths which occurred in 1997 in police and prison custody. This is the highest number of deaths ever recorded for one year in the Australian criminal justice system. These deaths occurred in a range of circumstances, mostly among men averaging 31 years of age, and 31 percent were on remand at the time of death.
