An estimated $246 billion was spent on alcohol and drug abuse in 1992. This study seeks to quantify the effects of alcohol and drug abuse disorders in dollar terms, and the results are detailed in specific areas titled: health care expenditures; premature death; impaired productivity; motor vehicle crashes; crime; and social welfare.
