Year 2000 Computing Crisis: Status of Bureau of Prisons' Year 2000 Efforts

In updating the information covered in a briefing with Senator Lott's office on September 10, 1998, the author finds that, because of its progress to date and its plans for the remaining renovation, validation, and implementation activities, the Bureau of Prison's (BOP) risk of Year 2000 (Y2K) non-compliance appears to be low. BOP reports that its only mission-critical information technology (IT) system, SENTRY, is Year 2000 compliant and that, as of January 1999, 94 percent of its 2,021 mission-critical non-IT systems are compliant. In addition, although the BOP initiated some outreach programs for state and local corrections communities, the author suggests that BOP should be more pro-active in its approach to these agencies.
