Noncriminal Juveniles: Detentions Have Been Reduced but Better Monitoring Is Needed

In compiling this report, GAO used a questionnaire to gather information on the extent to which status offenders have been detained. GAO examined efforts to meet federal regulations within each state's juvenile justice system. The analysis concludes with the observation that although significant reductions in detainees were reported, procedural protections were not consistently provided to status offenders.
