The Jail System

Virginia has 95 counties and 80 jail facilities with a rated capacity of 16,670. The state Dept. of Corrections inspects jails and enforces compliance with jail standards.

The Prison System

The Dept. of Corrections managed 38,069 inmates in 2007, operates 50 institutions and smaller correctional units, and has 11,584 employees.

The Community Corrections System

The DOC's Community Corrections section supervised 51,954 probationers and 6,850 parolees in 2007. The agency operates in 4 regions and 42 district offices.
