Overview of Nevada's Correctional System Nevada

The Jail System

Nevada has 17 counties and 22 jail facilities with a rated capacity of 7,306. The are no jail standards or inspection programs in the state.

The Prison System

The Dept. of Corrections, governed by the Board of Prisons, managed 13,400 inmates in 2007. The Department operates 8 institutions, 10 camps, one contract facility, and a restitution center. The DOC has 2,235 employees. Closure of a prison and work camp are being considered in 2009 due to funding shortages.

The Community Corrections System

The Div. of Parole & Probation, Dept. of Public Safety, supervised 13,461 probationers and 3,653 parolees in 2007. The Division has 4 regional and 10 satellite offices.

The crime rate in Nevada is about 18% higher than the national average rate. Property crimes account for around 83.4% of the crime rate in Nevada which is 14% higher than the national rate. The remaining 20.1% are violent crimes and are about 38% higher than other states. The following graph shows how Nevada compared to the rest of the states.
