Overview of Michigan's Correctional System Michigan

The Jail System

There are 83 counties in Michigan with 93 jail facilities. The rate capacity of all jails is 18,378. The state Dept. of Corrections inspects jails and enforces standards compliance.

The Prison System

The Dept. of Corrections managed 50,233 inmates in 42 facilities in 2007. The agency has 17,381 employees. Budget reductions are forcing closure of two facilities in 2009.

The Community Corrections System

182,706 adults were on probation at the end of 2007. Felony cases are supervised by the Michigan DOC's Field Operations Administration. The FOA supervised more than 50,000 probation cases and nearly 21,131 parole cases at the end of 2007. The DOC also administers the Michigan Community Corrections Act.

The crime rate in Michigan is about 3% lower than the national average rate. Property crimes account for around 85.1% of the crime rate in Michigan which is 6% lower than the national rate.
