Overview of Maryland's Correctional System Maryland

The Jail System

There are 30 jail facilities in Maryland's 23 counties with a rated capacity of 13,670 inmates. The Maryland Commission on Correctional Standards inspects jails and enforces standards compliance.

The Prison System

The Div. of Correction, Dept. of Public Safety and Correctional Services, operates 27 facilities, has 7,272 staff, and managed 23,433 inmates in 2007. One facility was opened in 1811. The agency's budget in FY 2006 was slightly over $1 billion.

The Community Corrections System

The Div. of Parole & Probation, Dept. of Public Safety & Corr. Services, supervised 98,470 probationers and 13,856 parolees at the end of 2007. The Division has approximately 1,100 employees.
2007 Crime Rate for Maryland
The crime rate in Maryland is about 8% higher than the national average rate. Property crimes account for around 84.2% of the crime rate in Maryland which is 5% higher than the national rate.
