There are 105 jail facilities in the state's 64 parishes with a rated capacity of 31,635 beds. Jails are inspected for standards compliance by the state DOC and the LA Office of Public Health.

The Prison System

The Corrections Services agency within the Dept. of Public Safety and Corrections managed 37,540 inmates in 2007. The agency has 8,126 staff, operates 13 facilities, and contracts with 2 private prisons. The agency's 2007-2008 budget was $653.4 million.

The Community Corrections System

The Div. of Probation & Parole, LA Dept. of Public Safety & Corrections, supervised 39,000 probationers and 24,085 parolees in 2007. The Division has 4 regions and 21 district offices.
