The Jail System

There are 93 jails in Kentucky's 120 counties with a rated capacity of 14,745. The KY DOC conducts jail inspections and enforces state jail standards.

The Prison System

The KY Dept. of Corrections managed 22,457 inmates in 2007. The agency has 2,900 employees in the Institutions Divison and operates 13 facilities. The DOC also uses three private prisons.

The Community Corrections System

The DOC's Div. of Probation & Parole, with 400 officers, supervised 42,510 probationers and 12,741 parolees in 2007. Field offices are organized within 13 judicial districts.

The crime rate in Kentucky is about 25% lower than the national average rate. Property crimes account for around 89.5% of the crime rate in Kentucky which is 23% lower than the national rate.
