Overview of Florida's Correctional System Florida

The Jail System

There are 108 jail facilities in Florida's 67 counties with a rated capacity of 60,589 beds. Facilities are mostly managed by sheriffs or local corrections agencie. The FL Sheriffs' Assoc. inspects jails for standards compliance.

The Prison System

The Florida Department of Corrections managed 98,219 inmates at the end of 2007 in 137 facilities (including institutions, annexes, work camps, and work release centers). The Department's annual budget is $2.3 billion with more than 27,000 employees.

The Community Corrections System

The Office of Community Corrections within the DOC supervised 274,079 probationers and 4,654 parolees in 2007. There are 156 field offices throughout the state.
2007 Crime Rate for Florida
The crime rate in Florida is about 22% higher than the national average rate. Property crimes account for around 85% of the crime rate in Florida which is 20% higher than the national rate. The remaining 19.4% are violent crimes and are about 35% higher than other states. The following graph shows how Florida compared to the rest of the states.
