Overview of Colorado's Correctional System Colorado

The Jail System

There are 61 jail facilities in the state, all operated by sheriff's offices except Denver. Facilities range in capacity from 6 to 1,900 inmates. There is no state oversight of jails.

The Prison System

The Dept. of Corrections operates 29 facilities with a total inmate population of 22,841 in 2007. There are appoximately 5,570 employees in the Department. The agency's budget in FY 2006 was $773.4 million.

The Community Corrections System

22 judicial district probation offices, funded and coordinated through the State Court Administrator, supervise 77,635 probationers. The Dept. of Corrections' Division of Adult Parole supervises nearly 11,086 parolees. The Dept. of Public Safety administers a Community Corrections Act.
2007 Crime Rate for Colorado
The crime rate in Colorado is about 10% lower than the national average rate. Property crimes account for around 89.6% of the crime rate in Colorado which is 8% lower than the national rate. The remaining 9.3% are violent crimes and are about 25% lower than other states. The following graph shows how Colorado compared to the rest of the states.
